FORB and Theodore Judah School Gathering 4/3/16 by Dale

Students and parents from Theodore Judah school met with FORB volunteers April 3rd to learn about Sutter's Landing Park wildlife and riparian habitat.  The originally planned meeting date in March was postponed due to a recent rare storm and high river conditions. Nearly 35 people enjoyed sunny skies and learned about Sutter's Landing Park and the American River Parkway. The focus was on wildlife and riparian habitat. The group also collected trash the whole time as a community service by the members of the school karate club in attendance. Great refreshments were provided by parents that came along and everyone had a excellent experience.

We enjoyed thoughtful questions and answers and even managed to produce a California condor (on my shirt!) when requested. The group made quite a scene heading down to the river bank too.  Insects, mistletoe, snags, erosion, nocturnal activity, salmon, sea lions and much more were all part of the discussion. We had great wildlife sightings including ladybug battles,  a nearly fledged great horned owl chick across the river, mergansers, geese, tree swallows, a red-shouldered hawk, and a soaring Swanson's hawk who appeared to be checking the area out for the upcoming FORB "Return of the Swanson's hawk" event coming here next Saturday morning.

Many of the students will be competing in the annual Nature Bowl event at the Nimbus fish hatchery later this month. They should do very well given their interest and knowledge in the outdoor world. We all headed home happy and filled with good memories and a load of trash...
